As I walked through a deserted park, I noticed a tiny dog darting towards me from the opposite direction. I flinched at the sight of the small creature speeding towards me, but then heard someone calling out. The dog stopped abruptly and scampered back to an old couple. I smiled at them in relief, and they returned it—a warm, genuine smile that, for a fleeting second, felt like home.
They paused and started a conversation with me. Although I was initially apprehensive, I engaged, being careful not to reveal any personal details. Soon, they got comfortable, and our small talk turned into something more. The old man began telling me about his life, how he had moved to Manchester and, unexpectedly, found the love of his life. He spoke with a quiet joy about how meeting her had brought him a happiness he knew would last forever. His wife stood by his side, smiling, and added thoughtfully, "Life isn’t about fate; it’s about taking opportunities."
Her words struck me. It got me thinking—life really is short. We spend 25% of it being young and reckless, another 50% working hard, and only the remaining 25% truly being ourselves, finding happiness. Why, then, do we waste so much time worrying? Worrying about someone not liking us back, or feeling like we’re not enough.
Every person we meet is an opportunity, and who we choose to be with depends on where we want to go next. Distance, insecurities, or how smart someone is shouldn’t stop us from liking them—as long as both are willing to try and make it work. None of us are perfect, but we are the sum of our experiences, and that is enough. We all start with clean slates. Sometimes, taking a leap of faith is all we can do, trusting that life has a funny way of guiding us to where we’re meant to be.
Maybe the right person is someone you never expected to meet, or someone who doesn’t fit your ideals. But if you’re both willing to grow together, that’s what truly matters.Listen to your heart for a second, close your eyes and breathe, if you smile thinking about them, maybe they’re the one.
So, here I am, on a random Monday in a mesmerising city, hoping for a guy to like me back.
